What Can I Make With Sunflower Seeds

Filed under: Nuts — Susanne @ 7:10 pm

Thanks to some smart coupon shopping, I was able to get packs of roasted sunflower seeds for 15 cents each and stocked up since we occasionally like to snack on them. Now that they are sitting in my pantry, I’ve been wondering what I can do with them other than just snacking on them plain.

Here are my ideas so far:

  • Sprinkle the sunflower seeds on salads for some extra crunch.
  • Add them to muffin batter. I think it would go really well with some pumpkin or cranberry muffins.
  • Make some trail mix out of sunflower seeds, dried fruit and dry cereal.

I’d appreciate any other ideas and any recipes you may have that include sunflower seeds.

You already got the most obvious uses. Let me see…

    Well, there’s Granola…
You could put them in bread for a little different texture,
Maybe if you ground them up you could do something with that.

And then of course, there’s arts & crafts. (Or at least for the shells, if you got that kind)

This is definitely a hard one though….

There’s a special technique for eating sunflower seeds and, like most kids, I spent hours perfecting it. I’d stockpile a few salted unshelled seeds in one cheek like a squirrel, release them one at a time to crack their fragile armor with my front teeth, extract the kernels and manipulate the empty shells with my tongue to my other cheek for storage.

I stumbled on this use quite by accident. I like to make stir fry meals and usually add water chestnuts at the end for a little crunch and tradition. I didn’t have any water chestnuts last time, so I grabbed the only thing I could find that would be crunchy, which were sunflower seeds. Turned out they were really tasty! Now I use them instead of water chestnuts.
