Avocado is a medium to large evergreen tree with large, leathery, deep green leaves. It has limited commercial value in the lower Rio Grande Valley and is often found in landscapes across South Texas. The popularity of its fruit, particularly in Mexican food dishes, and its tropical appearance have spurred considerable interest in growing avocados at home.

While dozens of cultivars are grown in California, the Hass avocado is today the most common. It produces fruit year-round and accounts for the majority of cultivated avocados in the US.[3][15] All Hass avocado trees are descended from a single "mother tree" that was raised by a mail carrier named Rudolph Hass, of La Habra Heights, California.[2][15] Hass patented the productive tree in 1935. The "mother tree", of uncertain subspecies, died of root rot and was cut down in September, 2002.

For a super fast guacamole dip mash a ripe avocado and then add about a table spoon of salsa (I use store bought). Mix it in well and your dip is ready. It's great with corn chips or as a side to cheese quesadillas.

I put a twist on a grilled cheese sandwich by adding turkey and avacado with a wonderful special cheese other than cheddar. My favorite is swiss.

I heard of avocado fruit cups that are served in Brazil. I think they're pretty easy to make... just one ripe avocado, 2 tsp. lime juice, 1 - 2 tsp. sugar to taste. Mix it all up and put in a fruit bowl. Then refridgerate until ready to serve.

Avocado is a perfect first food for baby. It's mildly sweet and bland, easy to mush, high in fat and nutrients, and not a likely allergen. My babies love avocado!

Add some slices of avocado to any salad for a creamy, filling taste full of good fat. You'll use a lot less dressing in a salad with avocado in it.

You can also add some avocade, garlic, salt and pepper, lime juice and a slash of olive oil for a yummy "guacamoly - style" dressing.
